No bids - Hart will be retained at his MLB salary for 2010.

Wait. Do I HAVE to take him at MLB salary? What if I don't want him? There's nothing under section 8.3 of the rules that says that I have to take him.
All I see is: "If a GM fails to respond or chooses not to match the best contract offer made to their player, then the player will be granted the ability to sign with the new team."
Clarification and rule, please?

Seems to me that the restricting team should have the option to pass on the player in the same way as normal - however, in this case, the player would become a regular FA since no other team bid on him. I imagine it would be treated as any other non-tender and the releasing team would not be able to bid on him for a period of 30 days.
Of course, this is new territory, so I defer to the league office.

I'll officially take Hart on a one-year MLB contract.
That said, I'd still like for the rules to be clarified and updated on whether or not it's mandatory for the RFA team to take a player who doesn't receive an offer.

This is one of the reasons we generally recommend GMs making their own offer on the player. If you had offered 5 years at $501K, Hart would have been yours.
I'm surprised it's an issue since you did stipilate a 5 year contract minimum.
However you are correct and the rules should be amended accordingly.

I'll be blunt; the only reason I RFAed the guy was to see if someone else would be willing to offer him a five-year contract. I didn't want the guy. I can already hear people say "why did you RFA him if you didn't want him?" Like I said, I was trying to get someone else to bite. That said, I see how I could have offered the league minimum and still made out OK. I guess I didn't bother because I thought someone else would bid. Fair enough. Thanks. -Shawn
