Even though I'm a Yankees fan (if I'm a fan of any particular team), I gotta hand it to Lee for choosing what sounds to be substantially less $$$ (though still a great haul) to go play where he apparently wanted most all along. What a shocker though as nobody mentioned the Phillies as a possible destination for him. And now, they've got one seriously fearsome SP rotation w/ Joe Blanton as their #5(!).

Good for Lee, and good for me! Thrilled about a 5 year deal!

I think no one was mentioning Philly bc Philly had seemingly traded Lee to avoid signing him to a huge, long-term contract. Combined with the way that Lee took the trade (personally), I could see why no one thought that relationship would be renewed. I'm happy to see him in the NL though, certainly.

The Phills apparently traded Lee because they didn't think they could get him under contract long-term. Seemed strange at the time, but all worked out in the end - for them, at least.
Be interesting to see how it all shakes out - if it burns up MLB or just flames out! I'm a Dodgers fan, gotta have something to look forward to...

Yeah, looks like Ruben Amaro got lucky there although this probably means they're overspent on SP rotation now -- they'll probably need to deal away Blanton at the very least.

Hmmm... 120M over 5 years (plus a sizeable 6th year option)? Not quite as low as originally thought, but still a good deal lower than the Yanks' offer if that option year doesn't vest.

That $120M includes $12.5M buyout if they don't pick up the sixth year. $135M over 6 years if they pick up the option.
Rangers were apparently at $138M for 6 years and a 7th year option that vested at $23M.
Yankees were at $138M for 6 years and $147M for 7 years.
Looks like Rangers actually offered the most money and turns out Lee told them he would sign if they made the 7th year guaranteed. They declined and he took the Phillies deal.
Yankees were obviously 3rd - shown by Lee calling Daniels himself and having the agent call Cashman to tell them the bad news.
