If a player retires, the team will only be responsible for 50% of the current and the following year's salary.
Example:
Player X contract: $5M (08-11)
Penalty = 50% of 2008 & 2009 salary = $5M if all claimed in 2008 or $2.5M for 2008 and 2009.
However, no player may be offered a contract which extends more than 1 year past his 40th birthday. In the event that the player is already 41+ years of age, he may be offered a 1 year contract only.
Example: 1. Player Y (38 years old) - maximum contract length = 3 years 2. player Y (42 years old) - 1 year contract.
